FAMILY OF 16-YEAR-OLD KADYN WADDY BRINGS WRONGFUL DEATH ACTION OVER FATAL SHOOTING AT MARINER’S CAY APARTMENTS
TAMPA, Fla. – August 7, 2026 – Dominic Waddy, as personal representative of the Estate of Kadyn Raine Waddy, has brought a wrongful-death action against the entities alleged to have owned, operated, managed, maintained, or controlled Mariner’s Cay Apartments in Spring Hill, Florida. The action seeks accountability for alleged failures to provide reasonable security before the August 18, 2024 shooting that killed Kadyn, who had turned 16 twelve days earlier.
The defendants are Lamson Avenue Apartments, Ltd., doing business as Mariner’s Cay Apartments; Richman Property Services, Inc.; and The Richman Group of Florida, Inc. The complaint alleges that at approximately 7:40 p.m., Kadyn was a passenger in a vehicle carrying several teenage boys when multiple rounds were fired toward the vehicle as it entered the apartment complex at 4253 Central Park Drive. Kadyn suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital. Two other teenage occupants were also wounded, according to the complaint.
The complaint alleges that criminal activity at or near the property was foreseeable and that the defendants failed to take reasonable measures to protect people lawfully on or near the premises. Among other things, it alleges inadequate security personnel or patrols, lighting, surveillance, access controls, responses to prior criminal activity, and warnings about dangerous conditions. These allegations have not yet been proven in court, and the defendants will have an opportunity to respond.
“Kadyn was a beloved 16-year-old whose life was taken in a place where families and young people should have been able to feel safe,” said Dominic Waddy. “This case is about seeking answers, accountability, and meaningful change so that no other family has to endure this kind of loss.”
The lawsuit asserts separate wrongful-death claims against each defendant. It seeks damages available under Florida law for Kadyn’s survivors and estate, including loss of support and services; loss of companionship, instruction, guidance, and protection; mental pain and suffering; medical and funeral expenses; and loss of prospective net accumulations. The complaint requests a jury trial.
